Veterans Golf Classic

If you or your members are interested in a great golf tournament, this is the one for you. I hope you will broadcast my message throughout your Department and in your Department publications. This is about camaraderie, friendship and a good time playing golf.

Friends,
I invite you to join me in Myrtle Beach, SC this May for the Veterans Golf Classic. I have been competing in this event for many years and enjoy taking part with almost 500 Veterans from across the country each year. In addition to the 54-hole, two person team format, the tournament also features a CUP CHALLENGE that pits the VFW against the American Legion. The VFW reclaimed the CUP last year and need your help to secure it again in 2010. The dates run from May 23 – 26. Cost for three days of golf, prizes, welcome reception and awards dinner for you and a guest runs no higher than $250.

Word to the Wise

From Steve Van Buskirk at National Headquarters:
We have recently been advised that an IRS agent, in connection with an audit, requested that a Post provide specific information on each community activity or patriotic event it conducted or sponsored, including specific information concerning expenditures made in connection with those activities or events. The Post had not adequately documented those activities and events and had failed to keep copies of the Community Service, Americanism and Youth Project reports submitted to the Department nor prepare a Community Service Book. The Post is now scrambling to come up with evidence that substantiates entries on their 990 and, ultimately, substantiates the Post’s entitlement to its tax exemption.
Hopefully that Post will be able to work around its problems, but it serves to remind everyone of the need to maintain records that prove it engages in exempt purpose activities and is entitled to exempt tax status. Well kept Community Service, Americanism and Youth Activity records will go a long way in that regard.
